Sometimes we seem to get so busy that we almost forget some of the things we do in this busy place called life. I almost forgot about one of the most exciting lessons I have ever learned.
While working and trying to maintain a balanced schedule I found myself as a volunteer Elementary School Girls Basketball Coach. Alyssa, my oldest daughter, was in the fifth grade at a private Christian School. My job had caused us to relocate and this was her fifth school. To offset the horror of the move I had promised her she could get involved in sports at her new school if her grades were kept up. She had a great teacher that year that helped her get "caught up" and I had to keep my bargain.
I found myself on Saturdays at basketball gyms. I plan to share many things I learned in these gyms for in the next years I would be taught many valuable lessons not just about basketball. It was in those gyms that I learned more from those girls, the referees, the parents, basketball, and yes, coaching. Considering I had NEVER even played, let alone coached, basketball.
My daughter was playing on a coed team in fifth grade and my Fatherly Volunteerism changed the next years team. For my efforts I would recruit, sponsor, support, and coach an all girls elementary team. And that WE did.
The next few years would be life-altering for me. I learned more about myself in those gyms than I thought I knew. I learned more about myself and others than basketball, however there was a trophy involved in our second year. I have often said there are many many things I have no idea how to do, but give me some time with someone who does, and I will learn. And so I did. I learned the "Power of a Team." And this year I plan on sharing these lessons i learned with others who are hungry to win.
Join me in the journey as we will talk each month about "The Winning Team"
Be Blessed...
